As fall proceeds, you’ll need your heat pump to work effectively to remain comfortable at home. If it doesn’t warm your house efficiently, you’ll debate whether to repair or replace it. Here are a few reasons you might need to invest in a heat pump replacement:
Age of the Heat Pump
Generally, air-sourced heat pumps last 10–15 years. With good care and moderate use, they can last 20 years. If you have a geothermal heat pump, it can last 25 years or more.
Taking good care of your heat pump includes having professional technicians look at it on a regular basis. Once a year is usually enough; twice is even better.
Significant Changes in Your Energy Bill
When you compare a given month’s energy usage against the same month in previous years, it should be fairly consistent. Assuming fairly constant weather patterns each year, if your bill rises sharply all of a sudden, you might need a new heat pump installation.
Abnormal Noises
All heat pumps make noise, but it should be a fairly quiet hum. Occasionally, a heat pump will click, too, particularly when switching modes from heating to cooling and back again. However, loud noises, such as rattling or heavy thumping, mean that you might need a heat pump replacement.
Uncomfortable Conditions
A heat pump losing efficiency will have a hard time warming your home consistently. For instance, you might notice hot and cold spots throughout the house. Alternatively, it may not be able to reach the set temperature at all.
This could mean that part of it has frozen or that there’s poor airflow because of some other reason. In any event, such problems could indicate that it’s time to start shopping for a heat pump replacement.
